Floyd B. Carothers

Mr. Carothers is owner and lead counsel for the firm. He was born on March 24, 1940 in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S.E.E. in 1962. He received his J.D. from Duquesne University in 1965. In 1965 he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar and U.S. District Court, Western District of Pennsylvania. Additionally, he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Carothers is a member of the Patent Law Association of Pittsburgh and the Intellectual Property Section of the Allegheny County Bar Association.

The firm of Carothers and Carothers represents three generations of expertise in Intellectual Property Law, starting in the late 1800's with Floyd N. Barber, an original charter member of the Patent Law Association of Pittsburgh. Mr Carothers' father, William D. Carothers, joined the practice of Floyd N. Barber, his father-in-law. Mr. Floyd B. Carothers joined the firm in 1962 and has been in the position of Owner since 1972.

Carothers and Carothers mostly represents corporate concerns. However, approximately 40% of the firm's clients are individuals. The firm has also represented overseas corporate concerns, such as Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. of Osaka, Japan in the preparation and filing of patent applications in the United States, and on advisement in infringement matters. The firm also represented Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. of Osaka, Japan (PANASONIC) on the vast portion of their United States trademark matters, including preparation and filing of trademark applications and conducting trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings in the 1960's, 70's and 80's. Carothers and Carothers has also represented successful local businesses in their startup on intellectual property matters, such as Respironics, and Mr. Carothers also has business experience with startup companies, such as Black Box Corporation, wherein he was an initial incorporator, stockholder and served as Corporate Secretary and intellectual property counsel.

Carothers and Carothers is also associated with and backed of counsel by the law firm of Paul A. Beck and Associates which also has very extensive experience in all areas of intellectual property.
